Already got a Domain name -
If you already have a Domain name you will need to inform the company you have the domain registered with to to change the Primary and Secondary Name Server. This will leave your current company as the administrator/register and they would bill you when your current registration period is up. Below are the Domain Name Server details you would require (if you are taking up hosting with us).
| Unix Hosting |
Primary Name Server |
ns5.lightning1.net |
| |
Primary IP address |
84.18.198.70 |
| |
Secondary Name Server |
ns6.lightning1.net |
| |
Secondary IP address |
84.18.198.71 |
| Windows Hosting |
Primary Name Server |
NS3.FASTWEBINTERNET.CO.UK |
| |
Secondary Name Server |
NS2.FASTWEBINTERNET.CO.UK |
Alternatively if you wish to transfer a .uk domain to us you will need to change the IPSTAG to 123CONNECT. For .com .org .net please get in touch (Contact us on the left menu). This would incur additional cost, please check our pricing.
Need a Domain name -
I can not compete with the larger registrars of domain names. I recommend freeparking and will explain how they work in relation to this site.
1.Try a name in the box below, this will cause another window to pop-up explaining if the domain you have tried is available. You may need to try a few names.
Is your domain name available?
|
2. When you find an available name you will need to register it using the form provided. 'Forwarding Details' use the under construction tick box for now.
3. Once registered you will need to log-in, if not already, click the 'Maintenance' button at the top. Scroll down the page to 'Change the DNS information of a UK domain name' or '.com, .net, .org Domain Name Modification' and click the 'Next >' and the following 'Next >'. Make sure you domain is selected in the drop down box and click 'Next >'. In the boxes provided you need to use the relevant Domain Name Server details.

Web Space -
The best way to work out what web space you will need will relate to what you want to do with it. If you just need web space for a dozen or so pages, then the simple web package would suit you. If you need PHP, ASP, My SQL and 500 MB of web space then the larger packages would suit you fine, if you are wondering what these are then I would not worry about using them at the moment. If you take a lower package and find you need more, then we will offer a competitive upgrade price based on individual needs. As a rule of thumb after you have completed a web site, on your own computer, make sure all the pages, pictures and sub folders are in the same folder. High light that folder, right click on it, select properties and you will have displayed the size of the web site. NB Assumes using Explorer in Windows. For more information on PHP, ASP and My SQL try search 'PHP tutorial' etc at Google.

Web site -
A web site can be created before you purchase your web space. On your computer you will need to create a folder to contain your web site. Every page and graphic that you use to make the web site will need to go in this folder. I have created a folder in the My Documents folder called MyWebSite and put all files here.
To create the web site you will need an HTML editor FrontPage, DreamWeaver, CoffeeCup are to name a few. To see a few free/shareware/demo version try http://tucows.enta.net/htmlbeginner95.html. A copy of FrontPage Express, which comes free on some Microsoft products can be downloaded from http://www.suresite.net/FPXpress.exe when you click this link select the 'Open' button, this may take a few minutes to download. Click the unzip button, wait a second or two then the OK and close buttons. Now go to the Start button in Widows, click it the the Run.... button. In the box put: C:\FPX\BIN\Fpxpress.exe click the OK button, you should now have the FrontPage Express screen appear. Now you can start to create the pages you want.
You can also get trial versions of the latest Microsoft FrontPage from Microsoft here.
| If you want to learn more about HTML then try the Goodies series. This is where I leant web building and still refer back to. |

I intend to add a full tutorial for a web site creation. In the mean time try here to learning more about HTML http://www.w3schools.com/html/

Uploading (FTP) -
Once you have created your site on your system you will need to upload it to the internet. This is normally done by FTP (File Transfer Protocol), but not if you are using FrontPage 97 or later to create the web site. But first you will need to purchase your web space. Once you have your web space you need an FTP program. I will use WS_FTP LE which is free for home use and can be found at http://www.tucows.com/preview/195136.html. Once you have downloaded and installed this software open it. You should get something like this, click to enlarge.

Click the 'New' button and enter any profile name you like, host address would be ftp.<your user login>, user ID and password would be the username and password I supplied in the joining e-mail, now tick the Save Pwd box. If you are on line WS_FTP will connect to your web space. The two box on the screen are: on on the left your computer 'Local System' and on the right the web host 'Remote System'. By clicking the green arrow at the top of the left box you will move up through the folders on your computer and then by double clicking a folder in that file you will go in to that file, continue this until you get to the folder with your web site in. On the right if you have connected with the server you will see several files. HTTPDOCS is where you need to put your web site, so double click on this and you are ready to copy your web site to the host. Please note if this is the first time you come to upload your site and there are already some files in the httpdocs folder, highlight them, then press the delete button on the right had side of the WS_FTP. To copy the files across just highlight the ones you want to copy and press the left to right arrow in the middle and off it goes.

After a few moments the right hand screen will refresh its self and the files you highlighted on the left will now appear on the right. As long as you have one file called index.htm, html, shtml etc. You can now go to your web browser and see your web site on the internet.
With a site created in FrontPage 97 or later you will need to use publish within FrontPage. Click File, Publish Web... then you will need to use the details supplied by your host. Then you just need to click the Publish button each time and FrontPage will do the rest.
